Car Insurance for Teachers

Some insurance companies offer specialized coverage or discounts for teachers, but how much you’ll save depends on which company you choose and what discounts are available in your area.

Insurance companies consider many factors when setting your rates, including your age, ZIP code and driving history. They may also consider your profession. Some companies offer teacher discounts, while others provide educator policies with specialized coverage, such as a waived deductible if your car is damaged on school property. Offerings vary by company, and not all discounts and policies are available in every state.

Several insurance companies offer special discounts, coverages and other benefits for educators, including the following:

Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual offers teacher and educator benefits, including:

  • Waived deductible if your vehicle is vandalized on school property or during school-related events
  • Waived deductible if your vehicle is damaged in a collision while you’re driving for school business, such as to or from school-sanctioned events
  • Personal property coverage of up to $2,500 per incident if your teaching materials or school-owned property is stolen or damaged while in your vehicle

Plymouth Rock

Plymouth Rock offers the Teachers’ Insurance Plan to residents of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Some of the unique benefits offered by this Plymouth Rock plan include:

  • Special rates and discounts
  • 12-month policy instead of a six-month policy, so your rate won’t change for a year
  • Waived comprehensive and collision deductibles for covered losses on school property or when traveling to or from school-sanctioned events
  • Up to $1,000 in coverage for school property that is lost or stolen from your car

Horace Mann

Horace Mann is an Illinois-based company that offers financial products for educators and their families, including annuities, mutual funds and insurance coverage. An auto policy through Horace Mann offers some coverages and benefits specifically for educators, including:

  • No deductible for vandalism losses or collision claims on or near school property or while at a school-sponsored event
  • No deductible for a collision claim with another vehicle insured by Horace Mann
  • Liability coverage when transporting students in a vehicle insured by Horace Mann
  • Up to $2,500 (or $1,000 in some states) in personal property coverage for work items, such as textbooks or a laptop stolen from or damaged in your vehicle
  • Up to $2,500 (or $1,000 in some states) for veterinary care if your pet is injured due to a covered accident

Farmers

While Farmers doesn’t list specific coverages or discounts for educators on their website, it mentions the possibility of occupational discounts for teachers, police officers, firefighters and other professionals. Discount availability may vary by state, so check with the company to find out what is available to you.

Travelers

Travelers partners with the National Education Association, known as NEA, to offer a discount on home and auto insurance to educators. The company doesn’t specify what types of coverages or discounts are available to teachers or educators. The best way for NEA members to determine if Travelers is a good fit for their needs is to work with an insurance expert to get a quote for coverage.

Geico

Geico doesn’t provide specific teacher discounts, but it offers discounts to a variety of professional organizations, including the California Association for the Education of Young Children. Check the Geico website to find out whether your union or other professional organization is affiliated with Geico.
